Event Report
This week, we were welcomed to a fascinating lecture by Frank Zanderink from Stichting Rugvin. His talk focused on an unexpected but incredibly important topic: the ecological importance of whale poop.
Frank began by explaining the broader mission of Stichting Rugvin and their work in marine conservation and research. He then shifted our perspective toward the hidden connections within ocean ecosystems. While whales are often admired for their size and beauty, their ecological importance goes far beyond what we see at the surface. Whales feed at great depths but release nutrient-rich feces near the ocean surface. These nutrients, particularly iron, act as fertilizer for phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are microscopic organisms that form the base of the marine food chain and play a crucial role in capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. By stimulating plankton growth, whales indirectly support the entire food web.
Frank emphasised that the decline in whale numbers due to historical whaling disrupted this natural nutrient cycle, showing that protecting whales is not only about conserving a species, but about restoring balance in marine ecosystems. After the introduction, students were encouraged to discuss and think about this topic by playing an interactive game. The session ended with a warm round of applause and an opportunity to speak further with Frank.

About Event
Did you know whale poop plays a key role in healthy oceans and can even help fight climate change? In this interactive workshop by Stichting Rugvin, you’ll find out how. We kick off with a short lecture, followed by a simulation game where you explore the connections between whales, plankton, and the entire marine ecosystem.
Learn something new, play along, and never look at the ocean the same way again!
We're looking forward to seeing you there! 💙
