About Event

As a fungal sequel from "Mushroom Marvels 🍄🍄‍🟫", we dive into the symbiotic organisms: Lichens 🪵🌿. We have invited Harold, a biologist who works with Lichenology and Bryology, to Wageningen on 20th Nov. We will hear about the Dutch Lichen Diversity, how these organisms develop into extraordinary life forms, shape ecosystems, signal environmental change, and why they hold the key to understanding symbiosis and ecosystem resilience. The lecture will feature high-quality images taken by Harold himself and his colleagues, along with real lichen samples.

Sign up soon. We will provide drinks and snacks 🫖🍪. You can bring your dinner to the lecture if you finish late with your classes/work.

See you 💚

Harold is an ecologist who studied biology and science communication at Leiden University. He works for the Bryological and Lichenological Work Group (BLWG) and as a biologist for the startup Respyre, which develops moss walls for urban environments. He is a guest researcher at Naturalis Biodiversity Centre, where he studies plants, mosses, and lichens. He specialises in urban ecology.
Harold has a broad interest in nature but focuses mainly on sharing his fascination with the natural world with a wide audience. He leads nature excursions for Dagjeindenatuur and is a regular guest on Vroege Vogels. He is active as an aspiring freelance science communicator and journalist. He has written several scientific, professional, and popular publications. Lichens are one of his favourite types of organisms, due to their obscure and mysterious nature and their miraculous forms.
