On November 27th, we had the incredible opportunity to organise a special documentary screening featuring the graduation project of young student and director, Meike Schaapveld.

The 20-minute film provided us with an intimate look at the lives of chimpanzees, capturing their social interactions with such detail that the viewers felt they could look deep into their eyes and feel their emotions. It was a deeply personal and moving experience; the audience was completely mesmerised, with moments of both laughter and genuine emotion. Meike’s bravery in sharing her own personal feelings and thoughts within the film earned immense respect from everyone present.

Following the screening, we held an engaging Q&A session. The audience, which was a diverse group ranging from researchers and students to software developers, led to thoughtful discussions with Meike. Her knowledge about the topic and her way of speaking about it made it clear that she is really following her passion. Meike is currently pursuing her Master’s in Evolution of Behaviour and Mind at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), where she hopes to combine her love for documentary filmmaking with her interests in evolutionary psychology and animal emotions.

It was a very successful event; everyone left the room with a broader understanding of emotions across species, and new interesting connections. We will certainly be keeping an eye out for Meike’s future projects!
